When does your sick child need the doctor?

You can bring your child in for an appointment any time you feel they need to be seen. However, there are some times when it is very important to get checked out!
Fever: A fever, even a high fever, isn't an emergency - but it can make kids very uncomfortable. Feel free to treat a fever at home with over the counter fever reducers. However, if your child's fever doesn't resolve after three days, they should be seen in the office to be evaluated and treated if necessary.
Back to school: If your child needs a note to be excused from school or cleared to return to school, they need to be seen for an appointment.
Medication: Is your child sick enough to need prescription medication? Then they are sick enough to need an appointment. It is our policy not prescribe most medications (i.e. anti-virals, antibiotics) without an appointment first. This is for the safety and health of our patients.
Pain: Any severe pain should be evaluated in the office. Keep your child comfortable until the appointment with an over the counter pain relief medicine.
Dehydration: If your child is dehydrated, from vomiting, diarrhea, or not drinking, it is important they be evaluated. A dehydrated child will not urinate much and will act very tired. If they vomit sips of clear fluids, they are at high risk for dehydration.
Trouble breathing: If your child is breathing quickly, loudly, or is struggling to breathe, they should be seen very quickly.
Not recovering: If your child has symptoms that aren't resolving after 7-10 days, they should be evaluated.
Aren't sure? That's OK! We are here to help. If you aren't sure if your child needs to be seen, please call us and speak to a provider. We will help you figure out if an appointment is necessary.
